The smoke falls or fumaça falls or in portuguese “Cachoeira da fumaça” is part of Capão Valley attractions in the Chapada Diamantina National Park, which is located in Palmeiras municipality at an average altitude of 1000m. Considered the highest waterfall in Brazil and the fifth in the world, with 370 m of waterfall, the river at the top of the mountain has 1490 m of altitude. Sometimes, the wind prevents the water of the waterfall to hit the ground. Hence the name “smoke”: water spray on the descent, making a spectacle of colors and shapes amid the smokescreen.
The experience is unique when you get to the top of the hill where the unexpected view of the large valley and the falls appears and offers the perfect sight. The high is impressive and tend to make you fill as you would be sucked down by the emptiness. Pure experience.
Of all our tracks in the Chapada Diamantina, this one is probably one of the most tiring, but not the longest tho, because the first half of the path is only uphill and full of stones. But the walk of 6km is nothing impossible, since there are several rest stops at lookouts with beautiful views that you almost forget that you’re roasting in the sun.
