Praia da Concha, at 09:00 am, the group will participate in a lecture of about 30 minutes, in Portuguese. Researchers will give some rich information about the life and customs of these animals and also on the actions taken by national and international organizations to curb the indiscriminate hunting of humpback. After the lecture the group will be conducted to board the vessel, which will be presented to the crew.
Shortly after boarding the captain of the schooner passes safety information. There will have a buffet of typical fruits on the schooner, biscuits and mineral water. It is forbidden the use of alcoholic beverages on board. The use of life jackets is mandatory during the whole ride. It is forbidden to swim along the way, even if the boat is stopped.
ABOUT THE HUMPBACK WHALES:
Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) can reach 16 meters in length and weigh 40 tons! Despite its enormous proportions, it is extremely sweet and famous for its acrobatics and his “songs” in the reproductive period.
The humpback undertake extensive migrations, from the icy waters around the poles to the tropical waters where they stay from July to November to reproduce. In Brazil, they are at Abrolhos Bank and along the coast of Bahia an ideal nursery for these activities, with warm and relatively calm water.
In April 1996 was created the Humpback Whale Institute – Non Governmental Organization, non-profit – which aims to leverage the development of research activities of the Humpback Whale Project and other projects aimed at improving the quality of life of coastal communities of this region such as, for example, the Program for Environmental Education and Information and the Integrated Coastal Management Project.
